The History Department at the University of Victoria is seeking a CRC Tier II Chair in Modern Global and Comparative History. Candidates must possess expertise in the field of Global History and the ability to teach courses in Global History at the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as demonstrated research expertise in one or more of the following fields: Asian, Latin American or African history or the history of other areas of the Global South. The ability to use comparative approaches would be an advantage. Preferred approaches and thematic areas include the following: Colonialism, Imperialism and Decolonization; International Migration and Immigration; Indigeneity; Gender and Sexualities; Social Justice and Social Protest; Health and Society; the Environment; Digital Humanities.

The Canada Research Chair Program (www.chairs.gc.ca), established by the Government of Canada, supports scholars engaged in world-class research. The CRC program requires Tier II nominees to be within 10 years of receiving their PhD when they apply to the program; to be excellent emerging researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity; to have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; to be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality, and as chair holder, to have the potential to attract excellent students and future researchers.

The successful applicant will be nominated by the University for a Canada Research Chair; that nomination is then subject to review by the CRC Secretariat. Upon approval of the Chair by the CRC Secretariat, the successful applicant will be offered an appointment in the university, at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Following CRC approval, the earliest starting date for this appointment will be January 2016. The CRC position is for five years, renewable once by successful application to the CRC Secretariat. While holding the CRC, the candidate will teach a half teaching load (two one term courses per year). After holding the CRC Chair, the candidate will become a regular tenured member of the History Department.
